How to Learn a New Skill: Anchoring

In Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), anchoring is a process used to link a specific stimulus, like a physical touch, word or image, to a particular emotional state. This link allows us to trigger access to that state at will, similar to classic conditioning.

By mastering anchoring and applying it to our day-to-day lives, we can change our pattern of thinking and empower ourselves to overcome challenges.

How Does Anchoring Work?

As humans, we tend to dwell on the bad things instead of the good. Anchoring is a proven technique that changes your mindset by creating a neurological link to a good memory or emotional state instead of something negative.

Learning and utilising the NLP anchoring process typically involves the following steps (also known as R.A.C.E):

Recall a past intense state: Select a positive memory where you experienced a strong emotional response, such as motivation, confidence, calm or success, following a big personal win. Remember how you felt during that moment and evoke it in the present.

Anchor the state: While in this good emotional state, introduce your unique stimulus. Think of it as firmly pressing a button anywhere on your body if you choose a physical stimulus,  and be sure to choose something that works for you. For example, you might have seen some people do it on their ear or press their knuckle. But you can do it anywhere. This touch creates a neurological link between that good feeling or emotional state and your mind, altering the patterns of thinking.

Change or break the state: Once you’ve established that neurological link, it’s time to break the state by simply doing something else, like looking around the room for something you haven’t seen before.

Evoke and test the state: Wait until you’re out of the state you anchored and then test the neurological link you created by pressing that “button”. If it triggers that same emotional state you anchored, it has worked, but if it doesn’t, don’t worry too much. Think of it this way: you are basically retraining yourself and your mind, so, as Dory would say, “Just keep swimming (anchoring)!” 🙂

Like other NLP techniques, anchoring is a powerful tool for managing your emotions and achieving a mindset primed for success. By following these steps and practising regularly, you can master anchoring and use it to transform your personal and professional life.
